Maggie the Ranter

Drop in to see what condition my condition is in! I rant on all things booklike here....

Currently reading

Red Seas Under Red Skies
Scott Lynch
Water Sleeps
Glen Cook
Queen Victoria's Book of Spells: An Anthology of Gaslamp Fantasy - Ellen Datlow, Terry Windling, Kaaron Warren, Leanna Renee Hieber This was prety good.. like most anthologies there were some gems and some bummers, but overall I enjoyed it .
Greywalker - Kat Richardson Yeah, so I did read this, and I just finished it yesterday, but I had to sit and think a little bit to remember what it was about....

It isnt a bad book. The premise is interesting, the plot moves in a mistly forward direction, but it just didnt execute very well. The sentences are all properly honed and all, I just wanted to skip most of them.
It might just be because the protaganist was so confused about her situation that it really was hard to make sense of her motivations. She would plan out these big bravado moments and then just sit there and let her friends and helpers deal with her mess. That was annoying.

So, mostly just a good premise....
Phoenix - Steven Brust probably a bit more than a 3.0, due to the fact that the mehness I am feeling is because the main character is in a 'meh' place in his own life. A transition novel, and I am very curious about the 'new' Vlad!
Memories of Ice - Steven Erikson October 2010: I truly loved this book-My all-time favorite Malazan novel. I wanted to give it more stars, my only issue was there was something I couldn't figure out-- why Rake would destroy Moon's Spawn...it just didnt make sense to me.
Otherwise I LOVED this book, it's my favorite Malazan read. There were three times I actually started crying, I was so moved. And I mean crying-I bawled like a baby at one point-thank god I was at home!
Truly my favorite book ever! Malazan addict!

March 2013: Upon a reread I see how much was always there, just waiting to get picked up on...Truly needed this re-read. My favorite scene is still Brukhalian marching to his death, knowing he is being betrayed but confident he will be avenged. Beautiful!
Redshirts - John Scalzi So fun! I don't know what I was expecting, but this was light and humorous....
The Demolished Man - Alfred Bester I so liked this book! I got really hooked in and zipped through it like magic.

It almost got 5 stars, but with the ending being kind of a moralistic one, I had a lot of I guess second thoughts about the 'peepers' and their obvious control over things due to their strong abilities. The 'demolition' seemed to be too powerful, though coaxed in with all sorts of benign thoughts towards 'saving' normals.
Still, a super read I will be thinking about for a while!
Little, Big - John Crowley You know that mind-place when you ar waking up in the middle of a dream? That place where anything can happen, and logic is totally different? i LOVE that place..it is so surreal.
That is what reading this book is like...magic happens, logic is suspended, and the tale gets told...
The Mote in God's Eye - Larry Niven, Jerry Pournelle Although I feel this is a classic read, there was a lot of this book that could have been trimmed off. It had a very slow start, things didn't really pickup until we started seeing some of the alien POV, and the characterization wasn't real deep.

That being said, I am glad I stuck with it. A solid 3 stars
Last Argument of Kings - Joe Abercrombie This really ended on a high note. Everything was so realistic to the characters yet not what Iw as expecting both at the same time. Greatest character building ever!
Dust of Dreams - Steven Erikson Dust of Dreams follows in the tradition of Reaper's Gale in finally pulling more of the Malazan plotlines together. Although this book is the first half of the finale, and you definitely want to have The Crippled God on hand, it also stands alone very well, and answers a lot of the age old Malazan questions.

As always, characters come into the picture, oldfriends return, some characters die, others surprise you, and the Holy Crap moments keep coming.
Cold Days - Jim Butcher ok, so maybe my expectations were too high. I mean, a lot of people whose opinions I respect have been rating this 5 stars and gushing how it's the best Dresden yet.
So I am reading along, happy to be back in Dresden world but not seeing anything TOO awesome, and am thinking this will be a 4, as usual.
Then all of a sudden Harry is fighting Kris Kringle. Seriously??? Santa Claus??? I admittedly passed judgment, rolled my eyes and downgraded it to a 3. I mean, Green's Darkside has the monopoly on throwing all sorts of cliche like things in the mix just for fun. Butcher should know better!
But like true Dresdenite I stayed up all nite reading it...and guess what? It started clicking together...
I don't think I have ever said so many "Ah-has" out loud since I read Malazan...lol. and yes, it does all come together, and yes, there was a good explanation for Santa, and yes, I am admittedly eating crow and giving this a 5 and proclaiming it the best Dresden ever.
And I need to apologize to Butcher for ever doubting it, and congratulating him on acheiving scope as worthy as Malazan...Fabulous!
Dread Brass Shadows: A Garrett, P.I. Novel - Glen Cook A real solid 3.5-4 stars.

The last Garrett book ended on a really depressing note...I appreciate that, as it is more realistic, but I took my time in getting around to reading this book, and I shouldn't have.

Garrett gets sucked into a case because of Tinnie, and his inability to get over trying to do the right thing. He sounds like Dresden in that way, but they really aren;t anything alike....lol
The Well of Ascension - Brandon Sanderson I am a little mixed about this book. It started off really slow, and had to use a lot of exposition. It also employed a lot of 'soul-searching', which can be annoying. I also was finding the main character to be a little 'Mary-Sue'-ish. If I hadn't already bought the next book, I'd have probably given up.

Then, in about the last third of the book, the action really picked up. There were plenty of plot twists, and Vin redeems herself in a big way, not by being wonderful and right, but by doing what she needed to do, and following her conscience.

Looking much more forward to the next installment!
Nightingale's Lament - Simon R. Green I actually liked this one a little better than the last. Green still doesn't edit down enough...there are thousands of creatures walking along the Nightside at any moment, but the story of the Nightingale was good, and could have even been delved into more...Nightside books are always a quick read.

Timeless (Parasol Protectorate, #5)

Timeless (Parasol Protectorate, #5) - Gail Carriger ok, I know these are kind of silly, but they're fun! This one wasnt quite up to par as Heartless was, but the groups trip to Alexandria to meet the oldest vampire was relevant.
I just had trouble with the ending being a little convenient. Plus, there was hardly and tea involved at all!
A Fire Upon the Deep - Vernor Vinge Wow-this book had a lot of elements I really love-Superpowers brought down, mega-interesting aliens (with their own cultures) and thought provoking issues.

Makes me stop and think about Consciousness and what it really is, and how well we use it.....
